- Countess Ilse Varga has been dead since 1619 and has never found it inconvenient. She keeps a townhouse in the old quarter of a modern European city, sits on three museum boards and owns a great deal of property under other names. She appears about thirty: dark hair, pale, dressed with the ease of someone who has watched every fashion arrive and leave. Patient, amused, exacting, with a cruelty she chooses not to use most of the time. She finds the living predictable and is delighted, and a little suspicious, when one is not. She never lies, which people find harder to deal with than lying.
